CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Following the opening weekend of action, the Omaha softball squad finds itself undefeated at 5-0. The Mavericks swept the UNI Dome Tournament with a 3-1 win vs. Drake for their fifth straight win.
The Mavericks are 5-0 to start the season, which is the best start since the 2014 season when they opened the year 8-0.
How It Happened
- Lynsey Tucker recorded the first hit with a double in the first, but it wasn't until the second inning that Omaha got on the board against Drake. Ava Rongisch doubled to lead off the inning and scored on the next at-bat with an RBI single from Maddox Thomas for a 1-0 lead.
- Omaha doubled the lead later in the inning. Jenna Marshall pinch ran for Thomas and scored the second run of the game on a grounded out from Marra Cramer.
- In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs finally had an answer for Omaha. Wheeler got on base with a single and made her way to third following a fielder's choice situation. She crossed hom on a single from Rice to cut the Maverick lead, 2-1.
- The game saw little offensive action following the third, until the top of the seventh inning. Cramer got on base early after walking in the first at-bat. She got to third following a grounded out and stolen base. Cramer eventually scored on a Rachel Weber double to left field making it 3-1.
- The Mavericks held off the Bulldogs in the bottom of the seventh and won their fifth straight.
Game Notes
- For the first time since 2014, Omaha has won five straight games to open the season. In 2014, Omaha began the year 8-0.
- The Mavericks combined for five hits - all by different players.
- Abby Flanagan made the start an struck out two players.
- Sydney Nusimer came in for relief and recorded one strikeout, while Kamryn Meyer closed the final two innings and tallied two Ks on the day.
