Omaha Drops Two at Texas Classic

AUSTIN, Texas - The Omaha softball team looked to continue a historic start to the 2023 season but fell in two close games to start the Texas Classic Friday. Omaha fell to Incarnate Word in the opening game, 3-0. The Mavericks then challenged No. 9/13 Texas falling just short of an upset, 7-6.

With the losses, Omaha falls to 5-2 overall.

Game One: Incarnate Word 3, Omaha 0
How It Happened
  • The first hit of the day went to Omaha Friday in the bottom of the second inning. Ava Rongisch singled up the middle. Lynsey Tucker repeated the action in the bottom of the third and joined Maggie O'Brien on base who was hit by a pitch. All three were left on base and the game remained scoreless.
  • The Cardinals finally struck in the top of the fourth. Vilarreal singled to left field to lead off the inning. Altamirano walked in the next at-bat, and both would score on a single to right field from Guillen for a 2-0 edge.
  • Over the next two innings both teams tallied one more hit each, and in the seventh UIW would record another and plate its third run of the day. Guerra capitalized on a fielding error and the Cardinals won, 3-0.

  • Tucker, Rongisch, and O'Brien each recorded one.

  • Kamryn Meyer pitched a complete game. She finished with 11 strikeouts and falls to 1-1.

Game Two: Texas 7, Omaha 6
How It Happened
  • Friday's night cap was action packed with both teams tallying two runs each in the first inning. In the top half, O'Brien and Tucker got on base with back-to-back singles and were hit home by Rachel Weber who notched a two-run double.
  • The Longhorns responded with a single from Scott in the second at-bat. Washington then homered to plate both of them and tie the game.
  • The game was deadlocked until the bottom of the fourth inning when Texas took a slight edge. Maloney led off with a walk and made her way to third with a sac bunt and stolen base. Goode grounded out next, but Maloney scored on the play for a 3-0 lead.
  • The lead didn't last long with Omaha tying the game in the top of the fifth. The Mavericks gained early base runners in Jaelle Johnson and Sophie Cerveny following a hit by pitch and an error. The bases filled following Marra Cramer walking, and Omaha managed to plate one run on an O'Brien single.
  • Texas blew open the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Longhorns used four hits to score four runs. Scott singled to left field for two RBI, while Washington added another hit with a double to plate two more. Texas jumped out to a 7-3 lead.
  • The Mavericks didn't give up and sparked a seventh inning rally. O'Brien singled and was joined on base by Weber who reached on an error. Ross was set up for success and doubled to bring in O'Brien. Weber and Ross both scored on a single from Emma Durr, but the Mavericks fell just short, 7-6.

  • Omaha finished with nine hits against nationally ranked Texas.
  • O'Brien went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and one RBI.
  • Ross also finished with multiple hits at two.
  • Ross recorded Omaha's lone stolen base.
  • Sydney Nuismer pitched a complete game. She retired four batters and falls to 3-1.
