Prior to this season,
Joey Machado had spent his entire college career as a starting pitcher.
He may be settling into a new role as Omaha's ace middle reliever.
Machado (1-1) limited Creighton to just two hits over five innings Tuesday as the Mavericks topped the Bluejays 5-3 at Tal Anderson Field in the first of two meetings between the city's programs this spring.
Noah Greise's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth broke a 2-2 tie and gave Omaha a lead it never surrendered.
Eddie Satisky, who paced the Mavericks (4-9) with three hits, followed with an RBI single.
Omaha tacked on a run on a throwing error during a double steal an inning later. Machado, who struck out four batters, had an unearned run scored against him in the eighth after a triple by Jared Wegner.
Jarrett Blunt pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Mavericks, who moved to 2-1 in midweek games this season.
Jackson Gordon started for Omaha for the third straight midweek, surrendering two runs on two hits with three walks in three innings of work.
Mike Boeve gave him an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double.
Creighton (4-6) pulled even on a run-scoring double by Kyle Hess in the second then moved in front for the only time, at 2-1, an inning later when Wegner plated Nolan Sailors with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.
The Mavericks tied it in the bottom of the third when Boeve scored from third on a wild pitch.
Machado entered after that, striking out two batters after giving up a leadoff walk in the fourth. He walked one batter and hit two others in the game, but he pitched his way out of trouble. The Bluejays scored their only run off him when Boeve threw wide of home on a ground ball after Wegner's triple.
Omaha and Creighton were scheduled to meet again downtown on Saturday, but that game was cancelled due to expected poor weather this weekend. The Bluejays will host the second game May 10.
