OMAHA, Neb. - The top-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team won the first seven matches en route to a 42-4 win over eighth-ranked (NAIA) Dana College Thursday night at Sapp Fieldhouse. The win improves UNO's dual record to 8-1 on the year, while the Vikings fall to 4-4.
Terrell McKinney got the Mavericks rolling with a 6-4 decision over Clayden McKim at 125. McKinney is now 23-8 on the season with a 8-1 dual record.
At 133, Cody Garcia downed No. 9 Matt Jacobson by fall at 3:20 of the second period. The pin gives Garcia 24 falls on the season and is now just one shy of Pat Kelley III who holds UNO's all-time single-season record of 25 pins in a season (1995-96). Garcia is 37-0 with a 9-0 in dual record on the year.
Mario Morgan won his 18th consecutive match with a 3-1 decision over No. 12 Adam Manz at 141. Morgan is now 29-3 on the year and 9-0 in duals. At 149, Esai Dominguez scored four take downs and a near fall to win his match over No. 8 Eddie McCray, 12-9.
George Ivanov pinned Derek Rowe with 15 second left in the second period to collect the win at 157. The second-ranked Ivanov is 27-8 on the year with an 8-1 dual mark. At 165, Ryan Pankoke squared off with No. 4 Bulla Tuzon. Takedowns in the first and third periods helped Pankoke to a 6-2 win.
Two-time All-American Aaron Denson returned to the UNO lineup for the first time since the NWCA National Duals in January. After a scoreless first period of action, Denson pinned Josh Ghobadpoor at 4:54 of the match to collect his first dual win of the season at 174.
The Vikings collected their first team points of the dual when No. 3 Mark Peiffer defeated No. 4 Austin Boehm by major decision, 13-3. Top-ranked Jacob Marrs racked up 10 quick points in the first period before pinning John Schmalz at 1:49 of the match at 197.
In the heavy weight bout, Elijah Madison picked up the win by fall over Tyler Lauifi at 2:16.
The Mavs will be back in action tomorrow when seventh-ranked Minnesota State (7-3) comes to town. The dual is slated for 7 p.m.
