UNO Moves Into Semis With 27-12 Win Over Huskies

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Mavericks (2-0) won the first six matches en route to a 27-12 win over the ninth-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies (5-4) in the second round of the 2010 NWCA /Cliff Keen National Duals Saturday afternoon at the UNI-Dome.
With the win, top-seeded UNO will face 12th-ranked Minnesota State for the third-straight year in the semifinals. The dual is slated for an 11 a.m. on Sunday.
It marks the eighth-straight season that UNO has reached the National Duals' semifinals. UNO is 21-7-0 all-time against MSU in dual contests. Last season UNO defeated the MSU Mavericks 29-9 in the semifinals of the National Duals. The two squads also met last season on Feb. 6 in Mankato, Minn., with UNO edging MSU, 17-15.
Junior Ryan Pankoke defeated All-American and third-ranked Tad Merritt 8-4 in the 165-pound match. The win gave Pankoke his 20th of the season.
Redshirt freshman George Ivanov continued to get it done for the Mavs at 157 pounds. Fresh of his upset of Mercyhurst's Andy Lamancusa (7-5 decision) earlier this morning, Ivanov beat fifth-ranked John Sundgren, 8-3.
At 197, fourth-ranked Jacob Marrs met fifth-ranked Lucas Munkelwitz and earned the win with a 12-2 major decision.
Redshirt freshman Elijah Madison battled eighth-ranked Jacob Kahnke and picked up an 8-5 win at 285 pounds.
The Huskies picked up wins in the 174 and 184 pounds matches. Shamus O'Grady pinned Aaron Denson at 2:12 of the first period to put the first Husky points on the board. At 184, third-ranked Austin Boehm was pinned by eighth-ranked Derek Skala at 3:48.

Hastings College Open
UNO also sent wrestlers to compete in the Hastings College Open in Hastings, Neb. Redshirt freshman Matt Baker captured the title at 184 pounds. He went 4-0 on the day and beat Jacob Nowak 4-1 in the finals match.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Kottas claimed third at 157. He went 4-1 on the day defeated Koln Fink 4-2 in the third-place match.
