OMAHA, Neb. – UNO athletics is partnering with Qdoba Mexican Grill (www.qdoba.com) to pay tribute to local law enforcement and fire departments.  The Mavericks will host “Salute to Local Heroes Night” on Saturday, Sept. 12 when the football team takes on Truman State University at 6 p.m. at Caniglia Field on the UNO campus.

As part of “Salute to Local Heroes Night”, the Nebraska State Patrol will take on Douglas and Sarpy County sheriffs in a flag football game at 2 p.m.  Omaha police will square off with Omaha fire in another flag football game at 4 p.m.  A picnic for participants will get under way at 5 p.m.

“We are grateful that UNO and Qdoba have chosen to recognize the important work done by our local police and fire departments,” said Dan Stolinski, acting assistant fire chief for the Omaha Fire Department.  “This will be a great afternoon for the officers, firefighters and their families, and we look forward to cheering the Mavericks on to another victory.”

“Since Qdoba opened its first restaurant in 1995, our team members have demonstrated a passion for giving back to guests and communities in which Qdoba operates, and we encourage our team members to volunteer their time and expertise to help create lasting relationships with these communities.  As such, we are honored to feed Omaha’s local heroes on Local Heroes Night, as it gives us an opportunity to serve those who serve us every day,” said Ken Friednash, owner of Qdoba Mexican Grill.  “We often reflect, remember and appreciate those who serve our community on a daily basis but by providing dinner for these officers, firefighters and their families, we’re able to truly show our appreciation.”

Earlier in the day, Qdoba will host the Qdoba Quest Burrito Run beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Henningson Memorial Campanile on the UNO campus.  The course will take runners through campus to the Qdoba at 1110 S. 71st. Street before finishing at the UNO soccer field at the Chili Greens complex on Spring Street.

In a twist on traditional races, participants will stop at Qdoba and eat one burrito before continuing on to the finish line.  There will be a men’s and women’s division in both a competitive and non-competitive class.  Runners in both classes will be timed, but runners in the competitive class also will be timed on the eating portion of the event.  The male and female division winners in the competitive class will be racing to win free burritos for year from Qdoba.

Participants will arrive at the soccer field in time to watch the Mavericks host Truman State in an important MIAA contest at 12 p.m.

Season and individual game tickets for all UNO athletic events are on sale through the UNO ticket office and by calling (402) 554-MAVS.
