BROOKINGS, S.D. - Senior Cody Garcia and sophomore Taylor Escamilla earned first-place finishes at the season-opening Daktronics Open Saturday hosed by South Dakota State University. The University of Nebraska at Omaha had five wrestlers place.
Garcia wasted little time collecting his first win of the 2009-10 season by pinning Regina's Steve Schneider 47 seconds into the match. The win marked Garcia's 100th win of his career. He won his next match against Daniel Taylor, wrestling unattached, with a pin a 2:53 to move into the semis. Garcia picked up his third and quickest pin of the day over Cody Lensing, wrestling unattached, 44 seconds into the semi final match. In the finals, Garcia faced Nate Hansen wrestling unattached. Garcia came away with a 3-2 decision to claim first.
Garcia was named the tournament's Co-Outstanding Wrestler and Most Pins Awards. He shared the Outstanding Wrestler with SDSU's Tyler Sorenson. Garica's three pins moves him into fourth all-time at UNO with 50 in his career.
Escamilla opened with a 5-0 decision over Joe Arthur wrestling unattached. In his second match, Escamilla earned a 7-3 decision over MSU-Moorhead's Tim Johnson and a 5-4 decision over Lance Peters of Augustana earned him a spot in the championship match. The Freemont, Neb., native squared off with Northern State's Jared Little and notched a 2-1 decision to earn the heavyweight crown.
Top-ranked Esai Dominguez took second at 149 pounds. He fell in a 9-2 decision to Ryan Adams of North Dakota State in the finals. Dominguez picked up a pin over Nick Hutcheson and a 22-10 major decision over Nate Herda to reach the finals.
