OMAHA, Neb. - Upon further review, Central Collegiate Hockey Association officials let stand the result of last night's UNO hockey game with Bowling Green, giving the Falcons an extra point for a 1-0 shootout win over the Mavericks. The game ended in a 3-3 tie after regulation.
The Mavericks disputed the result, saying Bowling Green had used an inelligible player in the shootout. That player, freshman Jordan Samuels-Thomas, scored the only goal in the shootout but by NCAA rule was not to have participated because he had been whistled for a roughing penalty and was still in the penalty box when overtime expired.
The game officials did not notice the infraction until after the game had been concluded.
The Mavericks are now 3-0-2 overall and 0-0-1-0 in the CCHA. Bowling Green is 0-4-1 and 0-0-1-1. The two teams meet again tonight at Qwest Center Omaha. Face-off is 8 p.m.
UNO forced the shootout late in the third period. Trailing 3-2, the Mavericks pulled goalie John Faulkner and got the equalizer from Rich Purslow who squeezed a sharp-angle shot past Falcons’ goalie Andrew Hammond to make it 3-3.
Hammond was a difference maker all night. He stopped 43 shots in regulation and overtime and then turned aside all three UNO shooters in the shootout. He earned first star of the game honors.
After a scoreless first period, Eric Olimb opened the scoring with a powerplay goal, his first goal of the year, at 7:56.
Bowling Green responded later when Ryan Potacco tipped in a shot by James Perkin that just beat Faulkner.
UNO had a 2-1 lead after two periods when Jeric Agosta scored his team-leading fourth goal of the year on a powerplay at 16:29.
Samuels-Thomas tied the game on an early powerplay in the third period before Nathan Pageau scored even strength at 8:56 to give the Falcons their only lead of the game. In the process, both Samuels-Thomas and Pageau notched their first collegiate goals. They are the first third period goals surrendered by the Mavericks this season.
John Kemp and finished the game with two assists.
