OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men’s tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak with a doubleheader sweep of Doane and Midland on Friday at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center. The Mavericks (4-5) defeated both teams by the same 7-0 score and won all 18 singles and doubles matches completed on the day.
UNO won the doubles point and all six singles matches on the way to a 7-0 win over Midland. Freshman Razvan Grigorescu clinched the match at No. 1 singles, while sophomores Matt Dunn and Alex Woodward won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively to complete the 7-0 sweep.
The Mavericks repeated the feat, winning the doubles point and all six singles matches in a 7-0 triumph over Doane. The Mavericks quickly clinched the doubles point, dropping just five games between three matches. They dropped just one set in singles play, as Dunn and freshmen Luke Moorhead won at No. 3 and No. 5 respectively, and freshman Nathan Reekie clinched the win at No. 2 singles.
UNO returns to action on Friday, Feb. 24, taking on UMKC. First serve is set for 8 p.m. at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
Omaha 7, Midland 0 The Mavericks took control of the match early by sweeping doubles play and earning the point. Reekie and Dunn made quick work of Ryan Vitera and Ryder Ross at No. 2, 6-1. Woodward and senior John Ellis clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 3. Grigorescu and senior Colin Buckley completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory at No. 1.
Dunn was the first off the court in singles action, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Reekie dispatched Dylan Hantanelas at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1. Grigorescu clinched the match at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Andy McDill.
Play continued in the other three singles matches. Woodward completed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, while Moorhead picked up his first collegiate victory at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Ignace Warson overcame a 4-1 deficit in the first set to take the win, 6-4, 6-1.
Omaha 7, Doane 0 UNO rolled early in doubles play, as Woodward and Ellis won 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. Dunn and Reekie clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 2, while Grigorescu and Buckley completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory at No. 1.
The Mavericks dropped just one set on the way to six wins in singles play. Dunn was again the first off the court with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Moorhead cruised by Elliott Abromeir at No. 5, 6-2, 6-0. Reekie clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 2.
Grigorescu and Woodward won their respective matches at No. 1 and No. 4 in straight sets, and then after dropping the second set, sophomore Biraj Parajuli finished off a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) win in a super tiebreaker at No. 6 singles.
