OMAHA, Neb. – The field has been set for next week's Summit League Softball Championship; the league office announced Sunday evening. Omaha is one of six teams scheduled to compete in the tournament, May 10-13 at the Ellig Sports Complex in Fargo, N.D. The tournament champion advances to the NCAA Tournament as the league's automatic bid.
The Mavericks (15-29, 6-8 Summit League) earned the tournament's No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 seed South Dakota (21-28, 10-8 Summit League) on Wednesday, May 10 at 3 p.m.
Wednesday's other game will feature No. 3 Seed Western Illinois (20-30, 11-7) and No. 6 South Dakota State (19-34, 6-12) at 5:30 p.m.
The first round games between Omaha/South Dakota and Western Illinois/South Dakota State are single elimination games. The final four teams then play a double-elimination tournament.
IUPUI (21-27, 11-6) earned its first Summit League regular-season crown and seeks its initial tournament title as the No. 1 seed. North Dakota State (24-30, 11-7) will be the second seed in the tournament. The top two seeds earn a first-round bye.
IUPUI will play the winner of USD/UNO in the winner's bracket at noon CT on Thursday, followed by North Dakota State facing the winner of WIU/SDSU at approximately 2:30 p.m.
The double-elimination tournament concludes with Saturday's championship game at 1 p.m. CT. If necessary, a second championship game would be played immediately following. Saturday's final match can be seen on Midco Sports Network and ESPN3. All games can also be streamed, free of charge, on thesummitleague.org.
