VERMILLION, S.D. – The Omaha softball team split its Summit League doubleheader on Saturday with South Dakota, winning game one 9-5 before falling 5-1 in the nightcap.
The Mavericks are 10-24 (1-4 Summit League) overall, while Coyotes are now 13-23 (4-4 Summit League). The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday, April 9 with a single game starting at 11 a.m.
Game One – Omaha 9, South Dakota 5
Senior right-hander Abbie Clanton (5-11) pitched 5.1 innings allowing five runs on seven hits to earn the win in the opener. Sophomore righty Laura Roecker picked up her third save of the year by pitching the final 1.2 innings allowing two hits and a walk with a strikeout.
Freshmen Emily Klosterman, Emma Dargy and Hailey Bartz combined for seven hits and seven RBI. Klosterman went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI. Dargy was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, and Bartz was 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Jamie Holscher led South Dakota at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort with three RBI. Taylor Steinfeldt went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI.
Omaha used three hits and an error to take the lead in the top of the fourth. Junior Kelly Pattison reached on an error to open the inning and moved to second on freshman Vicky Kinney’s single up the middle. Klosterman then homered to give UNO a 3-0 lead.
South Dakota scored three runs with two outs to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. Jessica Rogers belted a two-out double, followed by Steinfeldt’s walk and Morgan Vasa’s single. The trio came in to score on Holscher’s double down the left field line to make it a 3-3 game.
UNO pulled ahead in the top of the fifth on four hits and two errors. Senior Lizzie Noble reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on senior Lia Mancuso’s infield hit. Junior Kelly Pattison loaded the bases when she reached on another fielder’s choice. Noble and Mancuso came in to score on a fielding error that allowed freshman Vicky Kinney to reach base. Klosterman then singled up the middle scoring Pattison. Dargy hit a two-run double down the left field line to give Omaha an 8-3 lead.
USD got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth on three hits. Kayla Fields led off the inning and came scored on Steinfeldt’s home run to left field.
The Mavericks got a run back in the top of the seventh. Senior Nicole Warren drew a one-out walk and moved to second on Klosterman’s single. The duo then pulled off a double steal that allowed Warren to score on Dargy’s sacrifice bunt a batter later.
Roecker allowed a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the seventh but induced a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Game Two – South Dakota 5, Omaha 1
South Dakota took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to go up 5-0 on Omaha.
UNO pulled a run back in the seventh inning on a Lizzie Noble RBI single to score freshman Kaitlyn Hunt, who had reached on a bunt single. The Mavericks were unable to add to their total as USD took the game 5-1.
Laura Roecker (5-12) started the game and allowed two runs in 1.1 innings on six hits. Freshman Anna Albaugh was solid in relief, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing three runs – one earned – on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. South Dakota starter Rachel Cue (4-7) pitched a complete game in the victory, allowing one run on eight hits with nine strikeouts.
Hunt was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Noble added a base hit with an RBI.
