Moulton, Alihodzic, Ghitis Earn Academic All-Summit Honors

OMAHA, Neb. – A trio of Omaha men’s soccer players – seniors Mark MoultonFazlo Alihodzic and junior Joseph Ghitis – were named to the 2016 Summit League Men’s Soccer Academic All-League Team, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Regular season co-champion and tournament runner-up Omaha placed a league-best three honorees on the team. Tournament champion and regular season co-champion Denver, along with Fort Wayne and IUPUI each had two selections. Eastern Illinois, Oral Roberts and Western Illinois each received one honor as all seven teams were represented by at least one student-athlete.

Moulton, Alihodzic and Ghitis also earned all-league honors this season, with Alihodzic being named Summit League Offensive Player of the Year.  Alihodzic holds a 3.39 grade-point average as a criminology and criminal justice major.  He led the league with 25 points from nine goals and seven assists.  Last season, he was named to the All-Newcomer Team and earned second-team all-conference accolades.

Moulton was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team with a 3.96 GPA, majoring in business administration.  He tallied seven points from two goals and three assists this season and tied a Summit League Tournament record with two assists in a single-game.  A three-time All-Summit selection, he was a Second Team selection in 2016 and a First Team honoree in 2014 and 2015.  Additionally, Moulton earned Academic All-Summit plaudits in 2014 and 2015.

Ghitis went 9-4-4 with six shutouts and a league-leading .762 save percentage in his 2016 campaign. He had a 1.06 goals-against average and 61 saves.  In 2014, Ghitis was named to the league’s all-newcomer team.  He carries a 3.49 GPA as a business administration major.

The team was voted upon by member institutions’ faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors. A total of 12 student-athletes were named to the team and honored for their academic and athletic performances this season.

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions.  The men's soccer all-league team is made up of the 11 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.
