Ortega, Brady Net Player of the Week Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Omaha hockey seniors Austin Ortega and Ian Brady were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively, the NCHC announced on Monday.

It’s the third weekly award of the season for Ortega while Brady picks up his first weekly honor.

Ortega tied for the team scoring lead with four points in Omaha’s sweep of Lake Superior State last weekend.  On Friday, Ortega scored the game-winning goal in Omaha’s 4-1 win.  In the process, he tied the NCAA record with his 23rd career game-winning goal.  He also was +3 in the game.  The following night, he had another goal, two assists and was +1 as UNO came from behind to win, 5-3.  With the four-point weekend, Ortega moved into the NCHC scoring lead for all games played with 27 points.

Brady tied Ortega for the team scoring lead against the Lakers last weekend.  On Friday, Brady had an assist, was +1 and had a blocked shot in Omaha’s 4-1 win.  The next night, Brady had three more assists and was +1 in UNO’s 5-3 come-from-behind win.  The four-point weekend helped Brady move into third in defenseman scoring in the NCHC for all games with 17 points.

The No. 18 Mavericks return to action this weekend when they host No. 7 North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6-7.
