BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Omaha baseball team broke an eighth-inning tie to defeat South Dakota State, 3-2, at Erv Huether Field on Friday. The Mavericks improve to 22-17 (7-6 Summit League), while the Jackrabbits drop to 21-22 (5-6 Summit League).
Sophomore Tyler Fox (8-1) won his league-leading eighth game of the year, holding the Jacks to two runs on six hits. Fox threw 7.0 innings, walking two and striking out four. Adam Bray (5-4) took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks while fanning seven in 8.0 innings of work. Senior Josh Bullock snagged his fourth save of the season, striking out two in the ninth inning.
Seniors Caleb Palensky and Tyler Splichal each finished 2-for-4 for the day, with Palensky driving in a pair of runs.
SDSU's Matt Johnson led the Jackrabbits with two hits of his own.
South Dakota State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Scott Splett's leadoff home run down the right field line. The Jackrabbits pushed it to 2-0 in the second when Cody Sharrow doubled to left center to plate Al Robbins.
Omaha tied it at 2-2 in the fourth when Palensky doubled down the right field line with two outs, driving in senior Brett Bass and sophomore Clayton Taylor.
The score stalled until the top of the eighth, when sophomore Schultz's two-out RBI single through the right side scored sophomore Collin Leif, putting the Mavericks up 3-2.
UNO's bullpen then came through for the final two innings. With one runner on in the eighth, senior Anthony Falcone got the next three batters in order, including two on strikeouts. In the ninth, Michael Finnochiaro singled to right to get on base with two outs, but Bullock quelled the threat with his second strikeout of the inning to clinch the 3-2 win.
