OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Fort Wayne on Friday at the Ballpark at Boys Town, earning a 6-3 win before falling 5-3 in 10 innings in the second game. The Mavericks are now 24-20 (9-9 Summit League), while IPFW is 19-29 (11-11 Summit League).
GAME 1 -- OMAHA 6, FORT WAYNE 3 Junior Cole Volkers (3-2) earned the win in relief in the opening game, holding IPFW to two hits over 3.0 scoreless innings with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. The loss went to Connor Lawhead (3-5), who gave up three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Sophomore Alex Schultz led the Mavericks offensively, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Cole Gruber also finished 2-for-3, and redshirt freshman Danny Suiter had a hit and scored twice.
Fort Wayne took an early lead in the top of the second off Kristian Gayday's solo leadoff homer to left center. The Mavericks tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when Gruber got in a rundown between first and second, allowing Jewett to score.
In the third, IPFW plated two runs on one hit to go ahead again, 3-1. Steve Lowden drew a bases-loaded walk to score Evan VanSumeren, and Carter DeBoe came in as Greg Kaiser reached on a fielding error on the next play.
Omaha tied it again in the fourth at 3-3 with Schultz's two-run double to score Suiter and senior Tyler Splichal. The Mavericks put it away in the sixth, crossing three runs on four hits. Suiter came in on Schultz's one-out single through the right side, and sophomore Clayton Taylor's sacrifice fly scored Schultz to put UNO up by two. The final run came with senior Caleb Palensky's RBI triple to left to drive in senior Brett Bass for the 6-3 tally.
GAME 2 -- FORT WAYNE 5, OMAHA 3 (10 inn.) Zach Mishler (3-1) got the win with his four-inning relief appearance, limiting UNO to one hit with three strikeouts. Senior Josh Bullock took the loss, surrendering two runs on three hits in the 10th inning while fanning two.
Splichal went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, while Bass and Taylor were each 1-for-4 with a home run apiece in the sixth.
IPFW jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead again in the first, with DeBoe doubling to left center , then scoring on Gayday's RBI single to left. UNO tied it at 1-1 in the second inning as Splichal's two-out RBI double to right center brought in Gruber.
Fort Wayne posted another run in the sixth when Gayday scored on a Lowden single to right, but the lead was short-lived. Omaha went up 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back solo homers by Bass and Taylor.
The game stalled once more at 3-3 in the seventh when Caleb Fenimore led off with a double to right center and later scored on White's RBI single to left. Fort Wayne then loaded the bases with no outs, prompting UNO to bring in senior Anthony Falcone, who shut down the threat with three quick outs.
After heading to extra innings, IPFW broke the tie in the 10th with two runs on three hits. Kaiser's sacrifice fly to center scored Wirth, and pinch hitter Shane Trevino singled up the middle to drive in Lowden, bringing the final score to 5-3.
Omaha and Fort Wayne close their weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 10 at Noon at the Ballpark at Boys Town. Senior Day festivities will be held prior to the first game to honor Omaha's seven seniors.
