Schultz Keys Mavs to 6-5 Walkoff Win Over K-State
Junior Cole Volkers (2-1) got the win in relief, holding the Wildcats hitless and scoreless in the top of the 10th. Jake Matthys (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and striking out one in 1.2 innings.
Junior Daniel Jewett finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, while senior Brett Bass and sophomore Clayton Taylor were both 2-for-5 with a run scored and another driven in. Schultz, with his game-winning single, finished 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, along with two walks.
After two scoreless innings, an RBI single to left by Bass plated Schultz, giving Omaha a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats answered in the fifth with a pair of runs by Blair DeBord and Clayton Dalrymple.
Kansas State furthered its lead in the top of the sixth, as with a run from Mitch Meyer on a DeBord double down the left field line. The Wildcats added another run in the seventh, with pinch runner Taylor Anderson coming in on a single from DeBord.
UNO responded immediately in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 4-4 with three runs on three hits. Schultz led off with a walk, and Bass got on with a single up the middle. Senior Caleb Palensky followed up with an RBI double to right to score Schultz, and a Jewett double to right center later got Palensky and Bass across to make it 4-4.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Kansas State regained the lead with Dalrymple’s RBI single to center that allowed Anderson to tally a run at 5-4. The Mavericks came right back in the ninth, as Taylor led off with a first-pitch solo home run to right, knotting the game again at 5-5.
The 10th inning saw K-State get the first two outs before Gruber drew a walk and stole second to move into scoring position. With an 0-2 count, Schultz came through with an RBI single to score Gruber, sealing Omaha’s 6-5 win, their first in the all-time series against the Wildcats.
Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, April 2, hosting cross-town rival Creighton at Werner Park at 6:30 p.m.
