OMAHA, Neb. - Vance Rookwood scored the only goal of the match with 7:55 remaining to give the Omaha men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Columbia on Sunday afternoon.
It marked the first win of the season for the Mavericks (1-2), despite the fact that they outshot their first two opponents a combined 27-13. Columbia dropped to 0-2.
On the goal, Sam Langston played a corner kick in from the left side. Chava Garcia, running across the 18-yard box, flicked the ball with his head into the six-yard box. Rookwood fought off a defender and, falling to the ground, placed a low shot into the middle of the net for the 1-0 lead.
As Columbia pushed forward in search of a goal in the final minutes, the Mavs were the ones who came closest to scoring again. Craig Buettner drilled a 20-yard shot off the crossbar, and the ball bounced down just outside the goal line. Mark Moulton crashed the net and got a header on the rebound, but it went wide of the frame.
The Mavs had good scoring opportunities earlier in the second half, too, but were unable to capitalize. Jesus Perez got through the defense on the left side but had his shot tipped by Columbia goalie Kyle Jackson. Later, Emir Alihodzic redirected a UNO shot from six yards out, forcing a fingertip save by Jackson.
The Mavericks, as they were in their previous two games, were the aggressor and outshot Columbia 15-14 with a 9-4 margin in shots on goal.
The Maverick back line was solid in the closing minutes, clearing away 50-50 balls and winning headers in the box. Goalie Matt Grosey made four saves, two of which denied point-blank scoring opportunities for Columbia. It was Grosey's first shutout of the season and fourth of his career.
The Mavs are on the road at Drake on Friday at 8 p.m.
