OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha men's soccer team dropped its season opener 2-1 to Grand Canyon on Friday night at the UNO Soccer Field.
Grand Canyon (1-0) scored the game-winner in the 68th minute just 18 seconds after Emir Alihodzic had tied the game on a penalty kick.
Grand Canyon opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Kyle Ciliento volleyed home a free kick that was played into the center of the box from 40 yards out on the right side. The Mavs went into the half down 1-0 but had an 8-4 shot advantage.
The Mavericks controlled possession to open the second half and were rewarded at the 66:19 mark when Sam Langston's cross into the box was hit by a GCU hand for a penalty kick. Emir Alihodzic buried the kick to the right corner to even the score at 1-1.
But the Antelopes answered right back just 18 seconds later. Gerrit Thomes slipped a ball behind the defense to Ciliento, who finished from the right side of the box to the left corner for the 2-1 lead.
The Mavs pushed forward the final 22 minutes in search of the equalizer but were unsuccessful. Omaha finished with an 18-6 shot advantage and 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Mavs head to Missouri State for a 7 p.m. game on Sunday.
