BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Omaha women’s basketball team fell 76-64 to South Dakota State Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena.  The Mavericks are now 8-8 (1-2 Summit League), while the Jackrabbits improve to 12-4 (3-1).

Senior guard Michaela Dapprich paced the Mavericks with 18 points, going 8-of-14 from the floor.  Senior forward Mikaela Shaw added her second-straight double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior guard Remy Davenport chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and five assists.  Junior guard Marissa Preston had seven points, while sophomore center Courtney Vaccher scored six.

Kerri Young led South Dakota State with 27 points, hitting 11-of-14 from the free-throw line.  Sydney Palmer went for 20 points, including going 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.  Ellie Thompson added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mavericks shot .452 (28-of-62) from the field, while the Jackrabbits finished at .400 (22-of-55) from the floor.  UNO shot .231 (6-of-26) from long range, while SDSU managed to shoot .368 (7-of-19) from deep.  Omaha shot only .250 (2-of-8) from the stripe, while South Dakota State connected on .806 (25-of-31) from the line.  The two teams were tied in rebounding, 37-37, but SDSU forced UNO into three more turnovers, 15-12.

Omaha and SDSU got off to a quick start, going a combined 6-of-7 from the field in the first two minutes.  A quick 5-0 spurt gave the Jackrabbits an 11-6 lead with 7:15 left in the quarter before a Dapprich jumper cut the lead to three.  South Dakota State’s defense held Omaha scoreless for three minutes as it built an 18-8 advantage.  A 3-pointer from Davenport and a jumper from freshman forward Jay Bridgeman reduced the lead to five.  A layup from Palmer made the score at the end of the first quarter 20-13.

Two quick buckets to start the second quarter forced Omaha to call a timeout as the South Dakota State lead moved to 11 points.  Layups from Bridgeman and Shaw brought the Jackrabbit lead to single digits with 4:09 left in the first half, 27-19.  A Shaw jumper with 1:42 remaining brought the Mavericks within seven at 30-23, but SDSU hit 3-of-4 free throws to end the first half, and UNO trailed 33-23.

South Dakota State came out of the break with a 12-0 run making the score 45-23 with 6:26 left in the third quarter.  UNO survived the SDSU onslaught and countered with a 10-0 run of its own.  Preston got things started with a pair of buckets.  Dapprich added five straight points as the Mavericks cut further into the lead.  A three from sophomore guard Ellie Brecht made it a nine-point South Dakota State lead with 2:34 left in the period.  A layup from Tiffaney Flaata stopped the Maverick momentum, and a basket from Thompson pushed the advantage back to double figures, 50-37.  Bridgeman hit 1-of-2 free throws to make the score after three quarters, 53-41.

A jumper by Young pushed the SDSU lead back to 15 points early in the fourth quarter, 58-43.  Five straight points from Dapprich and another trey from Davenport brought Omaha within nine points with 5:49 left in the final quarter.  Young again cooled a Maverick run with a basket.  A 3-pointer response from Preston and a Dapprich layup with 3:36 made the score 62-56.  Two straight three’s from SDSU pushed the lead back to double figures.  Shaw pulled the Mavericks within eight at 70-62, but the Jackrabbits hit six free throws to finish it off with a final score of 76-64.

Omaha returns to Baxter Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 11, hosting Western Illinois.  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m., and Donnie Baarns will have the radio call on 1290 AM KOIL.  Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
