Ahrens Wins Second High Jump Crown at Summit

FARGO, N.D. – Junior Stephanie Ahrens defended her high jump crown to lead the Omaha track & field team on the second day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships.

Ahrens, who won the event in 2016 and came into the championships tied for the top spot in the league, bettered her season best with a leap of 5-10 ½.  She edged out runner up Lexy Wittmayer of host North Dakota State by an inch and a quarter.

As a team, the Mavericks are in fifth place with 13 points.  North Dakota State leads the meet with 170 points while South Dakota is second at 117.  South Dakota State is a distant third at 16.5.

In action on the track, junior Annie Catania ran a personal best in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, taking sixth in a time of 11:31.52.  She was 12th in the event last year.

Several Mavericks also qualified for Sunday's finals.  Ahrens qualified fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.47.

Freshman Sydnee Mitchell-Jemison and sophomore Daylee Olson both hit personal bests in qualifying for the finals of the 400 meters.  Mitchell-Jemison ran a time of 56.54, more than a second faster than her previous best, while Olson was more than a half second better with a time of 59.51.

Senior Alyssa Thavenet qualified for the finals in the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.25.

The final day of the championships beings on Saturday at 11 a.m. from Schlanser Track at NDSU.
