Mavericks Prep For Summit at Two Meets This Week

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team will be at two meets this week in preparation for the Summit League Championships.

The Mavericks will compete in the USD Last Chance Meet at South Dakota and at the Nebraska Tune Up in Lincoln on Friday, Feb. 17.  Action begins at 5 p.m. at South Dakota and noon at Nebraska.

Last week, senior Alyssa Thavenet ran the fourth-fastest 800 meter time in school history to pace the Mavericks at the SDSU Indoor Classic at South Dakota State.

Thavenet ran a personal best time of 2:11.06 to best the field of 73 runners at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.  Lauren Houston also finished in the top eight, running a time of 2:13.90 to take sixth place.

Thavenet also was part of UNO’s 4 x 400 meter relay team, teaming with Sydnee Mitchell-Jemison, Houston and Kayla Sabotin to take eighth with a time of 3:58.55.  It’s the fastest time the Mavericks have posted in the event in two years.

Thavenet also was a part of UNO’s 4 x 800 meter relay team along with Anita Jenkins, Sabotin and Houston.  They ran a time of 9:11.27 to not only win the race but set a facility record at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

Mitchell-Jemison earned a personal best, clocking a time of 58.31 in the unseeded section of the 400 meter dash.

Sabotin also put up a personal best, running 5:07.22 in the mile to place ninth.  It was three and a half seconds faster than her previous PR.

Willa Koenig ran the ninth-fastest 5,000 meter time in school history, coming in at 18:27.14.  She was just ahead of Alyssa Averhoff who finished at 18:27.62.  Annie Catania put up a personal best by 46 seconds with a time of 19:20.26.

In the 3,000 meters, Rosie Gensichen had a PR with a time of 10:36.42.

The Mavericks got three personal bests in the 200 meters.  Mitchell-Jemison was UNO’s top finisher, coming in 23rd in the massive field of 139 runners with a time of 25.84.  Daylee Olson ran a time of 26.97 while Brekk Flax posted a time of 27.20.

The Summit League Championships will be held at South Dakota State on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25.
