TULSA, Okla. -- The Omaha baseball team suffered a second straight shutout at the hands of Oral Roberts Saturday afternoon, falling 6-0 at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The Mavericks are now 12-35 (9-15 Summit League), while the regular-season champion Golden Eagles improve to 35-14 (22-4).
Josh McMinn (8-3) earned the win on the mound, holding Omaha to two hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Junior Payton Kinney (3-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.
The Mavericks were limited to four hits on the afternoon, with doubles from juniors Ryan Cate (1-for-4) and Cole Patterson (1-for-1) and singles from junior Adam Caniglia (1-for-3) and sophomore Nate Mallott (1-for-3).
After a scoreless deadlock through the first three innings, Oral Roberts got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with Brent Williams' solo homer down the left field line to make it 1-0.
Omaha stranded a pair of runners in the top of the fifth before a shuttering ORU with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half of the frame, helped by back-to-back Kinney strikeouts.
Kinney had managed ORU in the one-run ballgame until the sixth, when the Golden Eagles plated five runs on five hits and an error to break it open. ORU loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, and a one-out RBI single by Dylan Snypes pushed in the first run. Trevor McCutchin later delivered a two-out, bases-clearing triple, and Sam Grellner followed immediately with an RBI single, which extended the tally to 6-0.
ORU allowed just two Maverick baserunners over the final three innings, while Omaha got a solid relief outing from freshman Cam Fowler, who kept the Golden Eagles to two hits and a walk over 2.1 shutout innings.
Williams finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and another driven in to lead ORU at the plate, and McCutchin was 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI.
Omaha's series at Oral Roberts concludes Sunday, May 14, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3, and links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
