OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team continued its opening league series Saturday afternoon, falling 15-0 in seven innings to South Dakota State at Seymour Smith Park. The Mavericks are now 2-16 (0-2 Summit League) on the season, while the Jackrabbits improve to 8-7 (2-0).
Ryan Froom (3-1) threw a four-hit shutout for SDSU, issuing two walks and striking out five. Senior left-hander Sam Murphy (0-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits with no walks and a strikeout over 2.2 innings.
Seniors Sam Palensky and Marcus Ethen, junior Cole Patterson and freshman Cole Thibodeau each had a hit for the Mavericks.
The Jacks, who had 17 hits for the day, got multi-hit efforts from Philip Jacobson (4-for-4, two runs, two RBI), Newt Johnson (3-for-4, four runs, two RBI), Josh Kunzmann (3-for-4, two runs) and Luke Ringhofer (2-for-4, three runs).
SDSU scored three runs in both the first and third innings, five in the fourth frame and four in the seventh to secure the run-rule victory in seven innings.
