OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha hockey team begins a stretch of three weeks on the road when it visits Northern Michigan of the WCHA on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25-26. Both games begin at 6:07 p.m. CT from the Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich.
The Teams Omaha is 6-5-1 this season and 3-3-0-0/0 in the NCHC, tying it with Western Michigan for third place. The Mavericks were swept for the first time this season, losing to then-No. 2 Minnesota Duluth, 6-4 and 3-2 last weekend at Baxter Arena. The Mavericks are 4-0-0 on the road or at neutral sites this season. The series between UNO and NMU is tied 17-17-2, but the Mavericks are 5-12-2 all-time at the Berry Events Center.
Northern Michigan is 3-10-1 overall and 1-8-1-0/0 in the WCHA, putting it in ninth place. The Wildcats are 0-5-0 at home this season, having already played three of the top four teams in the WCHA on home ice. They also have lost their last five games.
The Coaches Dean Blais is in his eighth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to three 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 397-236-59 in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 135-121-26.
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA’s Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is joined by associate head coach Mike Gabinet, a former UNO defenseman and a 2004 graduate, and assistant coach Leigh Mendelson, a 2015 Omaha graduate and former volunteer assistant coach for the team (2014-16).
Walt Kyle is in his 15th season as the head coach at Northern Michigan. The 1981 graduate of NMU is 255-251-65 in his time at his alma mater. He is assisted by John Kyle and Rob Lehtinen.
