Mavericks Back Home To Host No. 2 Minnesota Duluth

This Week
The Omaha hockey team hosts its second NCHC series of the season this weekend, welcoming No. 2 Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18-19.  Both games begin at 7:07 p.m. from Baxter Arena.

The Teams
Omaha is 6-3-1 this season and 3-1-0-0/0 in the NCHC, tying it with Western Michigan for third place.  The Mavericks swept their first series of the season last weekend at Miami, winning 6-4 and 6-2.  The Mavericks are 2-3-1 at home this season.  They are 9-12-2 all-time against Minnesota Duluth including a mark of 7-6-0 in Omaha.  UNO has won three straight games, a season high.

Minnesota Duluth is 8-2-2 overall and 5-1-0-0/0 in the NCHC, putting it in first.  The Bulldogs split a home series with Western Michigan last weekend, losing 4-3 on Friday before pitching a 2-0 shutout on Saturday.  The Bulldogs have gone 2-0-2 on the road this season.

The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his eighth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to three 20-win campaigns in that time.  The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 397-234-59 in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 135-119-26.

Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA’s Coach of the Year Award.  He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000.  He is joined by associate head coach Mike Gabinet, a former UNO defenseman and a 2004 graduate, and assistant coach Leigh Mendelson, a 2015 Omaha graduate and former volunteer assistant coach for the team (2014-16).

Scott Sandelin is in his 17th season as head coach at UMD.  The 1986 graduate of North Dakota and former Blais assistant is 295-279-77 in his time behind the Bulldogs’ bench.  He is assisted by Jason Herter and Brett Larson.

Friday’s game can be seen live statewide on NET and nationally on Fox College Sports Pacific, DirecTV channel 608-1 and Dish Network channel 453.  Dave Ahlers will call the action and former Maverick David Brisson will offer analysis.  Larry Punteney will report.
