Spenner Readies For Thorpe Cup
OMAHA, Neb. - UNO multi-eventer Sami Spenner is one of seven athletes who will represent the United States in the annual Thorpe Cup competition against Germany this weekend.
The meet will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 27-28 in Chula Vista, Calif. Spenner is the only collegian on the U.S. roster.
Teams are comprised of up to seven men and seven women who compete in decathlon and heptathlon. Athletes received a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events in the decathlon and heptathlon. The top five men’s and top three women’s scores are added together to determine the overall men’s and women’s team winners.
Spenner is coming off an outstanding junior season in which she set two school records indoors and three more outdoors. She was the Field Championship MVP of both the indoor and outdoor Summit League Championship, leading the Mavs to second and third place finishes respectively. She also was named to the Summit All-League Team both indoors and outdoors and was a member of the Summit League's Academic All-League Team for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Spenner won the Summit League championship in the pentathlon (indoors) and the heptathlon (outdoors) last season, UNO's first competing in the league championship.
In other news from late on Wednesday, Spenner was named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Selection. Spenner carries a 3.79 GPA in exercise science. In order to make the list, student-athletes must carry a GPA of at least 3.25 and meet one other criteria: indoors, rank in the top 96 in the country or top 48 in a relay event; or outdoors, participate in one level of the NCAA championship.
As a group, the Mavericks were one of 187 teams in the country to earn USFTCCCA All-Academic Team honors. They posted a 3.38 team GPA last season.
