Mavericks Fourth in Preseason League Coaches’ Poll

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men’s tennis team has been chosen fourth in the Summit League Preseason Poll, the conference office announced.  The poll was determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Denver received four first-place votes for a total of 16 points.  Oral Roberts (13) finished second and received one first-place vote, while IUPUI (nine) was third.  Omaha (seven) came in fourth, and South Dakota State (five) rounded out the poll.

Senior Colin Buckley and freshman Razvan Grigorescu were also included on the Summit League’s Players to Watch list.  Buckley won four matches at No. 1 singles last season for the Mavericks, while Grigorescu was ranked No. 146 in the United States last season by

The Mavericks were 11-15 (2-3 Summit League) a year ago and qualified for the Summit League Championship.  They return seven letterwinners, including the top three singles players, from the 2016 squad.

The 2017 dual season begins Jan. 13 with Oral Roberts hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff. League play begins Feb. 11 when Denver hosts South Dakota State. The Summit League Championship is hosted by IUPUI, April 28-29 in Indianapolis.

Summit League Men’s Tennis Preseason Notes

  • Denver's doubles team of Alex Gasson and Yannik James is No. 18 in the ITA preseason rankings.
  • The Pioneers could become the first team since Oral Roberts (2001-05) to win four consecutive tournament titles. A fourth straight outright regular season crown would a league first.
  • Denver's Diogo Rocha is four league singles victories from becoming the all-time leader in that category.
  • DU's Yannk James is 14-0 and enters the season tied for the 10th-most career league singles victories.
  • The Pioneers are five wins from equaling the longest league win streak in history. They enter the seasons third on the list with 16.
  • IUPUI's Brandon Currie ranks third on the all-time list for Summit League victories and can move into a second-place tie with three wins this season.
  • Indianapolis will host the Men's Tennis Championship for only the second time in history (2005).
