ELMHURST, Ill. – The Omaha cross country team has been chosen fifth in the annual Summit League pre-season coaches’ poll.

The Mavericks, who finished sixth in last year’s Summit Championship, received 24 points in the voting, just behind IUPUI which came in fourth with 27 points.

South Dakota and South Dakota State tied for first in the poll with 43 points each.  South Dakota received three first-place votes while SDSU got two.  North Dakota State was in third, just one point behind in the voting.  The Bison, the defending women’s champions, also received three first place votes.

This is the Mavericks’ final year of their Division I transition.  Although eligible to compete in the Summit League Championship, they cannot qualify for NCAA championship competition until 2015.

UNO will be led by its four seniors – Ashley Kildow, MiKayla Peck, Kristin Rogers and Katarina Zarudnaya.  All four were regular scorers for the Mavs last season with Rogers finishing as their top runner in three of six meets.

Omaha opens the season on Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Memphis Twilight Classic in Memphis, Tenn.  The meet starts at 9:20 p.m.
