OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team opened up an offensive onslaught Saturday afternoon, as the Mavericks shut out Fort Wayne 19-0 in seven innings at Seymour Smith Park. With the win, UNO improves to 12-31 (9-12 Summit League), while the Mastodons drop to 7-36 (2-21).
The Mavericks pounded out 15 hits and drew 12 walks as a team and were led by senior Marcus Ethen, who finished 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and five RBI. Senior Sam Palensky (2-for-6, one run), junior Ryan Cate (2-for-4, one run, three RBI), sophomores Nate Mallott (2-for-4, two runs, two RBI) and Jack Kalina (2-for-4, three runs, three RBI) and freshman Cole Thibodeau (2-for-4, three runs, one RBI) also had multi-hit performances.
Junior Payton Kinney (3-1) made his first start, earning his third win in as many appearances. He threw 6.0 shutout innings, scattering five hits with no walks and three strikeouts. The loss went to Josh Van Beek (1-2), who gave up nine runs on five hits and six walks over 1.2 innings.
Omaha scored in every frame, plating one run in the first, eight in the second, two in the third, fourth and fifth innings and four more in the sixth. The Mavericks capitalized on five Fort Wayne errors for the afternoon.
Omaha and Fort Wayne conclude their series on Sunday, May 7, with first pitch at Noon at Seymour Smith Park. The game marks Senior Day for five Maverick seniors -- Marcus Ethen, Shane Meltz, Sam Murphy, Sam Palensky and Brett Sasse -- who will be honored with pregame festivities.
