Mavericks Drop Twinbill to Oral Roberts

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday, falling 12-1 and 12-0 in seven innings to Oral Roberts at Seymour Smith Park. The Mavericks are now 7-26 (5-9 Summit League) on the season, while the league-leading Golden Eagles improve to 25-9 (13-1).

Justin McGregor (6-0) earned the win for ORU in the morning contest, tossing a complete game and keeping the Mavericks to one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Senior left-hander Sam Murphy (2-5) took the loss, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits and two walks with one strikeout in 2.2 innings of work.

Junior right-hander Payton Kinney threw 4.1 innings of relief, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out a season-high nine batters and issuing no walks. Between the fourth and sixth innings, he fanned six straight.

Senior Sam Palensky went 1-for-3 with a run scored, and junior Ryan Cate was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Oral Roberts got multi-hit performances from six players: Cal Hernandez (2-for-4, two runs, two RBI), Matt Whatley (2-for-4, one run, two RBI), Noah Cummings (2-for-4, one run, four RBI), Brent Williams (2-for-3, two runs, one RBI), Dylan Snypes (2-for-4, two runs) and Harrison Smith (2-for-3, two runs, three RBI).

Cummings and Williams both homered for the Golden Eagles, with a three-run shot in the third and a leadoff solo homer in the fourth, respectively.

After ORU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Omaha came back to tie it at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame. Palensky led off with a single to center, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Cole Thibodeau and scored when Cate swatted a two-out double to left center.

The Golden Eagles broke it wide open with an eight-run, eight-hit third inning, then plated another run in the fourth and two more in the seventh.

In the second game of the day, Josh McMinn (6-2) earned the win for ORU with 5.2 innings of shutout ball. He limited Omaha to four hits with two walks and struck out four. Junior right-hander Corey Binger (3-6) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 2.0 innings.

Thibodeau (1-for-3), senior Marcus Ethen (1-for-2), junior Cole Patterson (1-for-2) and sophomore Nate Mallott (1-for-3) each tallied a hit.

ORU was led by four hits apiece from Nick Roark (4-for-5, four runs, one RBI) and Dylan Snypes (4-for-5, four RBI). Cummings drove in five runs and finished 3-for-4 while scoring twice, while Hernandez (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI) also had a multi-hit effort.

ORU produced runs in each of the first three innings, posting three in both the first and second frames and five more in the third. They added a final run in the sixth.
