JONESBORO, Ark. – Mitch Ryan recorded the second-best 54-hole score of his career to lead the Omaha men’s golf team to ninth at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
Ryan shot a one-under-par final round of 71 to finish the tournament at 220, one off his career best score and good for ninth overall in the field of 85 golfers. His third-round score ties the second-best round of his career.
He opened his round on the seventh hole, birdying the par-3. He had two more birdies on the back side and one bogey and played par golf until a bogey on the closing hole, the par-5 sixth.
Ryan’s fellow senior, Ben Maskus, was second for the Mavericks and finished in a tie for 16th overall with a score of 224. His final round score of 73 featured three birdies including one on the 555-yard 13th.
Kevin Gordon and Max Hellstrom also shot 73 in the final round, and both finished at 232, good for a tie for 51st. Hellstrom had three birdies include two on par-5s.
David Huxham finished the scoring for the Mavericks with a total of 252 that featured a final round card of 82.
Kelly Brown, playing as an individual, shot a career-best score of 72 on Tuesday to finish at 228, good for a tie for 32nd.
As a team, the Mavericks shot a score of 290 in the final round, the second-best team round of the year, to finish at 907. Host Arkansas State won the event with a total of 880. ASU’s “B” team was second, two strokes back. Tennessee Martin and Missouri State tied for third at 890.
The Mavericks are back in action on Monday and Tuesday, April 10-11 at the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate hosted by Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn. It will be their final tournament before the Summit League Championships.
