Omaha Splits Games at Rock Chalk Challenge

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha softball team split two games at the Rock Chalk Challenge Saturday, defeating Southeast Missouri State, 6-5, before falling to UMKC 7-5. The Mavericks are now 9-16 (0-0 Summit League) on the season.

Omaha wraps up Rock Chalk Challenge play on Sunday, March 19 versus Tulsa (9 a.m.) and Kansas (2 p.m.)

Game 1 – Omaha 6, Southeast Missouri State 5
Southeast Missouri State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third before Omaha struck back for a run in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Nicole Warren led off with a single through the left side, advanced on junior Kelly Pattison’s single and then the pair pulled off a double steal. Warren scored on freshman Emma Dargy’s sacrifice fly to cut the Redhawks lead to 2-1.

The Redhawks added three runs in the fifth to make it 5-1, but UNO promptly scored three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth. Warren and Pattison each hit singles to open the frame. Omaha loaded the bases when SEMO hit freshman Emily Klosterman. Dargy lined a two-run single to score Warren and Pattison. After junior Kylie Schwarting had walked to load the bases, Klosterman scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-4.

The Mavericks then took the lead in the seventh, as Mancuso opened the inning with a double and moved to third on Warren’s single. Warren then stole second, allowing Mancuso to score the tying run on a throwing error by the SEMO catcher. Warren moved to third on Patttison’s ground out and scored the game winner with Klosterman’s sacrifice fly to right field.

The Redhawks drew a one-out walk in the bottom half of the seventh, but Clanton induced, a double play to secure Omaha’s 6-5 win.

Omaha reliever senior Abbie Clanton (4-8) picked up the win, holding Southeast Missouri State to one run on two hits and three walks while striking out a batter over 3.0 innings of work. The loss went to SEMO reliever Mackenzie Hoelting (0-3), who surrendered two runs – one earned – on two hits and a walk in two innings of work.

Warren finished 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs scored. Pattison went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Dargy drove in three runs with a 1-for-3 effort at the plate.

UMKC 7, Omaha 5
Senior Nicole Warren led the Mavericks at the plate in the second game, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.  Senior Lizzie Noble went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.  Junior Kelly Pattison added a 1-for-3 effort at the plate with an RBI.

Senior right-hander Abbie Clanton (4-9) took the loss in relief in the nightcap, allowing four runs – two earned – on three hits and a walk.  Andra O’Brien (1-6) picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits.

Omaha wasted no time taking the lead in its second game of the day, striking for three runs in the top of the first inning.  Senior Lizzie Noble walked and advanced to third base on two consecutive wild pitches.  Mancuso drew a walk and then stole second to give UNO runners in scoring position with no outs.  Warren hammered a 1-1 offering over the center field wall for a 3-0 lead.

UMKC countered in the top of the second inning as Bri Sims, and Kendra Leach hit back-to-back home runs to make the score 3-2.  UNO responded in the bottom half of the frame with a run on two hits and an error.  Freshman Hailey Bartz led off with a double, moving to third on freshman Kaitlynn Hunt’s single and scoring on an error to give Omaha a 4-2 lead. 

The Kangaroos jumped ahead of the Mavericks with four runs on three hits and an error in the third to take a 6-4 lead.  UMKC added another run in the top of the fifth on three hits to make it 7-4.
UNO got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Noble hit a one-out single, moved to third on Warren’s single to center and scored on Pattison’s base hit to right making it 7-5.

UMKC did not allow an Omaha hit over the final two innings.
