OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball program has a new home facility at J.J. Isaacson Field at Seymour Smith Park in partnership with the City of Omaha, the Omaha Athletic Department announced Thursday.
Omaha will play the majority of its 21 home games at Seymour Smith Park. The Mavericks' finalized 2017 schedule will be released in its entirety at a later date.
"Seymour Smith Park serving as our new home field marks an important step in the development of our program," interim head coach
Evan Porter said. "Not only will it serve as the home for Omaha Baseball, it also benefits local youth teams and collegiate summer leagues in the area and raises the profile of baseball in our city. It will provide an excellent playing environment, and we look forward to adding to the park's already rich baseball history.
“In the offseason, Assistant Athletic Director
Ethan Anderson led our senior leadership team in continuing to evaluate our needs from a facility standpoint, and we appreciate the efforts of our administration and the City of Omaha in support of the baseball program. We are grateful for the last decade of success our teams have had at the Ballpark at Boys Town, and we are excited for this next chapter ahead with games at Seymour Smith Park and Werner Park.”
The City of Omaha is completing a variety of facility and field improvements at Seymour Smith Park in preparation for the coming season, including grading and sodding of a new playing surface, a new irrigation system and work on the mound, plate and warning track.
“The City of Omaha is proud to have a Division I baseball team playing at a city facility,” City of Omaha Parks Director Brook Bench said. “We think that the partnership with UNO and the Parks Department is an exciting one that will lead to promoting the game of baseball in the city, and we look forward to the upcoming season.”
