Dave Ahlers was hired as the Director of Athletic Media Relations for the University of Nebraska at Omaha in August of 2008 and was elevated to Assistant Athletic Director, Communications in 2013.  He leads a team responsible for all communications with local, regional and national media regarding the achievements of UNO’s student-athletes and coaches.  He also serves as the sport administator for men's and women's tennis.

Prior to coming to UNO, Ahlers worked in the American Hockey League as the Director of Communications for the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, the top development team of the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League, for two years.  He came to Omaha following nine years in the same capacity for the Portland (Maine) Pirates, the top development team of the Washington Capitals of the NHL.  While with both teams, he directed all publicity for the team and all public appearances by players and team staff in the community.

Ahlers is also the play-by-play voice of UNO hockey, working alongside longtime color commentator, Terry Leahy.  He also has served as the television play-by-play voice for UNO hockey on NET since 2007.  Before UNO, he served as the team broadcaster for both Omaha and Portland for all 11 seasons in the AHL and won the James Ellery Award as the league’s top broadcaster in 2003.  He also has been honored by the Maine Association of Broadcasters with first place awards for both his radio and television play-by-play.

Ahlers’ stint behind the Mavericks’ mic is not his first in college hockey.  He was the television play-by-play announcer for University of Maine hockey from 1993-1995 before working in professional hockey.  He also worked nearly ten years as a news and sports reporter, producer and anchor for NBC affiliate stations in Bangor and Portland, Maine.

Ahlers is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America.  In addition to his duties with UNO, he is also on the board of the Omaha Hockey Hall of Fame.

Ahlers is a Maine native and graduated from the University of Maine.  He and his wife, Vickie, have a son, Will, and a daughter, Vivian.
