OMAHA, Neb. -- Omaha head volleyball coach Rose Shires announced Friday that Iowa Western Community College transfer Abby Bergsten will join the Maverick program for the 2017 season.

Bergsten, a 6-1 junior outside hitter, is a native of Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was a two-time ICCAC All-Region selection and an NJCAA All-Tournament Team member while helping IWCC to a national runner-up finish in 2016. Over her two seasons, the Reivers achieved a No. 1 national ranking, won a district title and went a combined 79-13. As a sophomore, Bergsten was second on the team with 3.43 kills per set and ranked 10th nationally with a .364 hitting percentage.

Bergsten is a product of Lewis Central High School, where she was a four-year letterwinner for Coach Dennis South. In her senior campaign, she was named first-team all-state and all-district and reached the 1,000 career kills milestone, capping a career that also included three straight first-team all-conference and all-city accolades. Additionally, Bergsten was a four-time state medalist for the Titans' tennis team.

Bergsten earned her associate's degree in biological sciences from Iowa Western and plans to major in pre-dentistry at UNO.

"Abby is a great addition to our team," Shires said. "She comes from one of the top junior college programs in the country and has excelled at a very high level of play. She will immediately enhance our pin hitter group."
